THE MATRILINEAGE PROJECT
by Susanna Knittel

"The female is the source of genuine human compassion"
His Holiness the Dalai Lama

In the archetypal relationship between mother and daughter and mother and son, the feminine is formed and informed for future generations. Latest research confirms that while the embryo is growing in the fluids of the mother, not only the organism grows. Subtle energy patterns are instilled in breath and tissue, transmitting ways of being on a cellular level.

Everybody’s relationship to mother, alive or internalized, is loaded with projections, expectations, power and desire. Western culture presents ‘mother’ as a very mixed blessing. In a society emphasizing masculine values, positive identification with the feminine needs nurturance and a deeper look with a discerned approach to find the treasures of the lineage.

With terror and violence attempting to control our human experience, I believe it is vital to cultivate qualities of caring, tending and connecting.

This project inquires into our connection to the historic relations from the motherline, using the body as the primary tool to access matrilineal consciousness.

We use the three fold process I call ‘Theater of One’ : Continuum movement, body based improvisation and deep listening. Open to the body wisdom, we move to acknowledge, transform and embody our generational past and present it in performance. By doing so we contribute to reweaving the web of the feminine matrix and fertilize our relational intelligence.
